High blood pressure (hypertension) is becoming more common in Nigeria. About 1 in every 3 adults has high blood pressure. Because healthcare can be expensive or difficult to access, about 80% of Nigerians use traditional herbal medicine for their health needs.

Below are some of the most commonly used herbs for managing high blood pressure, along with what research says about them.

No herb on this list should be used as a replacement for prescribed hypertension treatment.

1. Avocado Leaves (Persea americana)

Although most people eat the fruit, traditional medicine in Nigeria often uses the leaves to help manage high blood pressure.

How it is used: Fresh or dried leaves are boiled to make tea.

What research says:

Avocado leaves have demonstrated blood-pressure-lowering effects in experimental research. In an animal study, aqueous avocado-leaf extract caused vasorelaxation and reduced arterial blood pressure in both normotensive and hypertensive rats. The vasorelaxant effect appeared to involve nitric-oxide-dependent pathways.

A study also found that avocado-leaf extract reduced systolic and diastolic blood pressure in salt-induced hypertensive rats and inhibited ACE activity.

These findings are preclinical, however. They do not establish that avocado-leaf tea treats hypertension in humans.

Some studies suggest avocado leaf extracts may help lower bad cholesterol (LDL), reduce inflammation, and improve heart health.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of 13 randomized controlled trials involving 1,205 participants found that Hibiscus sabdariffa significantly reduced systolic and diastolic blood pressure compared with placebo in adults with mild-to-moderate hypertension.

A randomized Nigerian study involving untreated people with mild-to-moderate hypertension also found significant reductions in systolic and diastolic blood pressure after four weeks of hibiscus treatment.

11. African Basil (Ocimum canum / Ocimum basilicum)

What research says

Basil has demonstrated antihypertensive effects in animal models.

A randomized study of 24 hypertensive participants compared antihypertensive medication alone with medication plus O. basilicum tea twice daily for four weeks. The basil-tea group showed statistically significant reductions/differences in systolic and diastolic BP.

Another small pilot trial used 128 mg/day of powdered O. basilicum leaves as an adjunct to antihypertensive medication and reported significant reductions in mean arterial pressure over two weeks.

Animal and laboratory studies suggest basil contains flavonoids and essential oils that may help relax blood vessels and reduce oxidative stress. Human evidence remains limited.

In a study of renovascular hypertensive rats, Ocimum basilicum extract reduced systolic and diastolic blood pressure and was associated with reductions in angiotensin II and endothelin.

A separate experimental study also found antihypertensive effects in L-NAME-induced hypertension. These findings are encouraging but do not establish efficacy in people with hypertension.
