Diabetes mellitus is caused by persistent high level of sugar (Glucose) in the blood due to insufficient quantity of a hormone called Insulin.

The normal level of Sugar in the blood is 65 – 110mg/dl.

Types of Diabetes

There are different types of Diabetes but the major ones are

  1. Abnormal thirst (Polydipsia).
  2. Frequent urination (Polyuria).

Diagnosis

The most reliable way to detect diabetes is using a Glucometer.

A blood sample is taken after a person has fasted overnight. This is called Fasting blood sugar. The sugar level should never be more than 126mg/dl.

Blood sample of a person who has eaten can be taken but it should never be more than 200mg/dl. This is called Random blood sugar.

14 Herbal remedies

1. Bitter leaves

Vernonia amygdalina
This herb reduces the high level of sugar drastically and helps to repair the kidney. Squeeze the leaves in water and take 1- 2 glasses two to three times daily.

2. Bitter melon

Mormodica charantia
Squeeze fresh leaves in water and take a glass three times a day.

3. Brimstone

Morinda lucida
Squeeze fresh leaves in water with Bitter leaves and take a glass three times a day.

4. Cashew bark

Anacardium Occidentale
Boil the bark of the stem and take a glass four times a day.

5. Corn silk

Zea mays
Boil the silk in water, allow to cool and take one glass three times daily.

6. Garlic

Allium sativum
Combined with other herbs like Bitter leaves, mistletoe, Garlic helps in lowering high blood sugar level.

7. Mango leaves

Mangifera indica
Boil the leaves and take a glass three times daily.

8. Mistletoe

Viscum album
Taking a cup of mistletoe daily for 5 months have helped greatly in controlling high blood sugar.

9. Pawpaw leaves

Carica papaya
Green pawpaw leaves is very good for diabetes and Diabetes induced hypertension. Squeeze the leaves in water and take 200mls three times a day.

10. Plantain leaves

Musa paradisiaca
Green plantain leaves is useful in treating diabetes. Just boil the leaves in water and drink twice a day.

11. Plantain root juice

Musa paradisiaca
Pound plantain roots to get the juice, mix with half of volume of juice you get and you have a potent remedy for diabetes. Take Two spoon three times daily.

12. Scent leaves.
Ocimum gratissimum
Squeeze fresh leaves in water with Bitter leaves and take a glass three times a day.

13. Stool wood

Alstonia bonnei
Boil the leaves and take a glass three times daily.

14. Water

Even though this is not a herb, I added it because of its usefulness.
Taking adequate water regularly is very good in maintaining a very good health. Take two to three cups of water before you go to bed at night.

PS: Do not stop taking your medications abruptly.

8 Simple Effective home remedies for Malaria

Malaria kills children every year in Africa and is responsible for a lot of miscarriages and death of pregnant women. Children under 5 are particularly susceptible to infection, illness and death; more than two thirds (70%) of all malaria deaths occur in this age group. Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. It is preventable and curable

Despite all measures taken to overcome this disease, it has proven to be an uphill task. Coupled with the fact that Resistance to anti-malarial medicines is a recurring problem.

The good news is that researchers have discovered herbal remedies that can clear malaria parasites in the blood within 3 days.

These remedies have different combinations of herbs.

Home made Malaria remedies

Remedy 1

A combination of

  1. Mango(mango),
  2. Pawpaw,
  3. Vernonia amygdalina (bitter leaf),
  4. Guava
  5. Sweet basil,
  6. Lemon grass,
  7. Neem,
  8. Citrus aurantifolia (lime) seeds,
  9. Nauclea latifolia (African peaach tree) egbesi in Yoruba, uburu inu or mbitinu in Igbo,and
  10. Morinda lucida commonly called Brimstone tree. It is oruwo or erewo in Yoruba, eze-ogwu or njisi inIgbomarga in Hausa.

Produces 100 per cent elimination of malaria parasites, even drug-resistant strains, in humans. Take a glass of the extract three times a day.

Remedy 2

Hot infusion from the boiled

  1. Green leaves of pawpaw,
  2. Leaves of neem tree,
  3. Lemon grass,
  4. Guava,
  5. stem bark of Pattern wood (Alstonia boonei);

Taken as one wine glass full three times daily provided effective treatment for drug-resistant malaria.

Remedy 3

This is a combination of

  1. Neem tree (Azadirachta indica),
  2. Pattern wood (Alstonia boonei);
  3. Tropical almond (Terminalia catappa);
  4. Pawpaw (Pawpaw);
  5. Akuamma plant (Picralima nitida);
  6. Pentaclethra macrophylla (African oil bean tree);
  7. Phyllanthus niruri (stonebreaker);
  8. Euphorbia hirta (asthma herb and eczema drug);
  9. Newbouldia laevis (Chieftaincy leaf).

Remedy 4

Also, a herbal preparation made predominantly with

  1. Garlic,
  2. Ginger,
  3. Onions,
  4. Scent leaf,
  5. Lemon grass,
  6. Unripe pawpaw,
  7. Lime/lemon,
  8. African pepper (Uda in Igbo),
  9. Clove,
  10. Gongronema latifolium (Utazi in Ibo, arokeke in Yoruba)
  11. West African Black pepper (Uziza in Igbo)

has been effectively used to stop malaria and typhoid.

Remedy 5

  1. Morinda lucida, It should consist half of the whole concoction.
  2. Nauclea latifolia,
  3. Lemon grass,
  4. Male Pawpaw leaves,
  5. Moringa oleifera leaves because of it is high nutritional content and immune boosting properties,
  6. Mangifera indica, leaves and bark (Mango), which boosts red blood cells,
  7. Garcinia kola, (bitter cola) and
  8. Psidium guajava (guava) in equal quantity

Is effective in the treatment of malaria.

Remedy 6

In mild malaria, leaves of

  1. Vernonia amygdalina (bitter leaf) and
  2. Occimum gratissimum (sweet basil/nchuanwu in Ibo, effirin in Yoruba)

taken in a handful were macerated in 350ml of water, and the liquid strained ready to use. A glass (200ml) of the stained liquid was taken twice daily for two to three days.

Remedy 7

  1. Leaves of Citrus sinensis (sweet orange),
  2. Mango,
  3. Pawpaw,
  4. Vernonia amygdalina (bitter leaf),
  5. Guava,
  6. Sweet basil,
  7. Lemon grass,
  8. Neem and
  9. Citrus aurantifolia (lime) seeds.

The leaves of guava (P. guajava), paw-paw (C. papaya) lemon grass (C. citratus), neem (A. indica) were all washed thoroughly and boiled together without cutting them into tiny pieces, until there was a colour change. The liquid (decoction) was strained into bottles ready for use.

A full glass (200ml) of the decoction was taken three times daily for three days.

When the malaria fever appeared severe, with the patient very weak, the roots of A. barteria and M. lucida were boiled together with the above concoction (to increase the patient’s blood level –according to the herbalist).

The dosage remained the same.

In cases of very high fever, dried fallen leaves of paw-paw (C. papaya) were put incold water, and the patient asked to take a cold bath with the water. This is in addition to the oral therapy.

Remedy 8

  1. Guava,
  2. Neem,
  3. Pawpaw,
  4. Mango,
  5. Tilia europoea (Common lime),
  6. Cashew
  7. Lemon grass

are very effective in the treatment of chloroquine resistant malaria.
